I made breakfast early with one bowl of anxiety, a cup of slight panic and two teaspoons of terror. Was it my imagination or did the sea sound even louder than yesterday? On with the wetsuit after tying the car key into my board shorts pocket (sorry Jucy Rental if your reading this) and into the surf I went. The shop had told me to just watch others and take it from there. Well the others were not there and ahead of me I could only see superstar surfers. With everything to lose and the last piece of advice from the surfshop still echoing in my ears "Dont worry if you get washed out to sea you will have your fins on" I went for it and have been in love with the waves ever since.
I was due to leave for Gisborne this afternoon to stay with friends but Rob and Lou kindly asked me to stay till the weekend. The above headline tells its own story of how lucky I was.
So instead of standing under a doorframe whilst Gisborne experienced its earthquake I was instead treated treated to an evening meal by Rob and Lou at the nearby RSA Club (like the British Legion in UK) called "Snipers Hil"l. It comes with probably the best bowling green view ever (Uncle Angie expert bowler take note). I also had my first taste of the Maori potatoe called Kumura and it equals any to have come off the croft!
To round off the night we went to see the goldmine (big) and the old pumphose that cost millions to shift before the miners could commence.
