The bus dropped us off early at the start of the Tongariro crossing which claims to be the greatest one day walk in the world and includes Mount Ngauruhoe better known to Lord of the Ring Fans as "Mount Doom"...!!
Sadly the mist cancelled out any views but I still enjoyed the walk enormously and the bag of sweets and cakes I'd taken along for extra energy. The hike takes about six hours overall and Devils staircase is aptly named as a lung busting 45 minute climb and the Emerald Lakes are very Emerald. Also after reading heaps about volcanoes as a child it was pretty cool to finally walk over the South crater and to peer into the Red crater (hot not cool). The place is due an eruption any day soon so do not forget to pack your klaxon, fire vest and asbestos undergarments. Oh and some kendal mint cake.
