The dolphin trip went ahead today!! As bobbed about in the water and looked the wee Hector dolphin in the eye with waves crashing over me far out from Akaroa peninsula I was certain this was one of the best days of my life. They are beautiful, fast and most of all love to play!!
It was touch and go for sailing and when we set off the sea was rough. I'm glad the captain took the chance and we all jumped off the boat past the peninula well out to sea. The 5mm wetsuits mean you cannot sink which leaves all your time for the dolphins. I was given a shot of two stones to clack together and imeediatel I had five Hectors swiming around me. You must not touch them as they have very sensitive skin often carrying cuts for one reason or another. The good thing about this award winning trip is a contrbution of your fee goes back into the dolphins conservation too.
Back on land I felt exhilirated and with a steady stride set about obtaining essential provisions for the camping journey now ahead. (Teabags and biscuits mainly). The next few days will see a long drive as I head for Queenstown the adventure capital of the world and I made it as far as Omarou before nightfall. After levering my tent in between others I hoped to catch a sighting of the Blue penguins who reside here in Omarou. They even have their own apartments I beleive...........
