Day 158 Kota Kinabalu (Mount Kinabalu)

Today would see me commence the hike of Mount Kinabalu at over 4000 metres and half the height of Everest. My companions would be Tanya from Denmark also staying at my hostel and Cornelius our local guide.

We stopped a good few times on the ascent to get our breath in the altitude and rehydrate. Here Cornelius takes a chance to get the crack with his fellow guides.

You can tell here that Tanya is very pleased with her head torch and once we stopped at the mountain camp for the night to acclimatise she proceeded to read her book in the dark whilst I thought there was a lighthouse beacon nearby!

A big bowl of Tom Yam Soup (spicy soup) saw us in good fettle.

We were also high above the cloud line by this point and slightly delerious from the altitude posed for silly photos. Off to our beds for an early rise at 2 am to set off for the summit.....Altitude sickness permitting...
